Emily Lanzel
DDS, MS
Dr. Lanzel received her DDS degree (2012) and MS degree in Oral Pathology (2015) from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She has been a faculty member in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at the University of Iowa since 2015—currently Associate Professor. Her current professional memberships include: Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. -

Matt Geneser
DDS
FDr. Matt Geneser is clinical professor of pediatric dentistry and full-time faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa. A native central Iowan, he attended the University of Iowa (BS 2002, DDS 2006) before obtaining his certificate in pediatric dentistry from St. Joseph Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island (2008). After a short stint in private practice, Dr. Geneser took on a full-time academic role at the University of Iowa in 2011.Dr. Geneser served as graduate program director at the University of Iowa Department of Pediatric Dentistry from 2012-2019 and currently directs the undergraduate pediatric dentistry clerkship experience for dental students. He also currently serves as a consultant for the AAPD’s Scientific Program Committee as well as being a board examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the ABPD’s Qualifying Examination Committee.

Oral Pathology Lesions and Management
Lecture Presented by Dr. Emily Lanzel, DDS, MS
This course will cover common oral lesions/conditions (and not so common, but interesting lesions) and how to manage them in a dentistry setting. It will be presented in a case presentation style. Specific lesions and number of lesions to be covered will be tailored to the target group as determined by group interests and available time. At the end of this course the participant will be able to better diagnose and manage some common oral lesions. Participant will also be able to prescribe appropriate therapies for common oral conditions. -

Dental Trauma Preparedness: Equipping Your Office for Effective Emergency Management
Lecture Presented by Dr. Matt Geneser, DDS
Dental trauma can occur at any time, and a well-prepared dental team can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. This two-hour course focuses on practical strategies to ensure your dental office is ready to manage traumatic injuries efficiently and confidently. Participants will learn how to establish protocols, organize emergency kits, train staff for rapid response, and implement evidence-based treatment for common traumatic injuries. Through case-based discussion and actionable checklists, this course empowers clinicians to create a trauma-ready environment that improves patient outcomes and reduces stress during emergencies.
Learnings
Upon completion of these sessions, attendees should be able to:
Develop a dental office trauma preparedness plan, including staff roles and communication protocols
Assemble and maintain an emergency trauma kit with essential materials and medications
Apply evidence-based emergency management techniques for common injuries such as avulsion, luxation, and fractures
Train the dental team for rapid response and effective triage during trauma cases
Implement documentation and medico-legal best practices for traumatic dental injuries
Plan for follow-up care and referrals to optimize long-term treatment success
Fabricate effective dental mouthguards for use in athletic practices and competitions
Recognize and differentiate common oral lesions and conditions, as well as identify less common but clinically significant findings
Develop an appropriate differential diagnosis based on clinical presentation
Determine when to monitor, treat, or refer patients presenting with oral lesions
Implement appropriate management strategies for common oral conditions in a dental setting
Prescribe evidence-based therapies for the treatment of select oral lesions and conditions
Apply clinical knowledge through a case-based approach to enhance diagnostic and treatment decision-making
